The Augmented Abject, Basics in the Art of Cartooning
from Latin: abiectus = throw away or down; abandon; overthrow; humble
"Abjection is the terror we experience when we are reminded that beyond the lofty idea of a clean, civilized, and controllable self, we are still animalistic, instinctive creatures, producers of bodily fluids and excrement."
In the beginning of this course we dealt a lot with the critical theory from the essay “From One Identity to Another” by Julia Kristeva from the book “Desire in Language”, which deals with the definition of the abject. This includes everything that can cause disgust, dislike or aversion. We worked on this text and under this topic for the first half of the semester.
In the second part of the semester, we worked on the illustration of the stage and the outer walls at the Open Space Domshof, also regarding abjection. We also designed one of the walls of the exhibition with the collected drawings of a toilet wall from the HfK. The exhibition opened on June 26, 2021.
