Operating freely between the various directions of visual communication and the fine arts, Illustration at the HfK has a strong multidisciplinary approach, ranging from advertising, editorial and book illustration, over comics and animation, to sculpture, painting, installations, film and performances. We represent a wide array of technical exploration, from the archaic roots of drawing to the most refined digital techniques, but always with the art of analogue drawing as our base. The subject is taught with the prospects of a professional career or higher studies within the field, but also considering the illustrative quality in relation to connecting subjects in art and design.

Samuel Nyholm, born in 1973 in Lund, lives as a draftsman, graphic artist, poet in Stockholm and Bremen, lectureship at ECAL Lausanne, exhibition at PS1 in New York, since 2012 professor of illustration at the Bremen University of the Arts. Samuel Nyholm, who publishes his figurative drawings under the acronym Sany, works as a graphic designer and artist. They vary motivic situations, which are peopled by a handful of fictional characters who keep popping up again and again, as the drawings refer topopular culture’s slapstick genre and play with prejudices and stereotypical simplifications. Samuel Nyholm's work often humorously depicts scenarios from the world of art, highlighting misunderstandings and misinterpretations and thus pointing to the gap between a symbol and its meaning.
